Grieving
Dec 30 2011, 7:15 PM EST
I was born in 1996 and am 15 years old. Jack Wild was my first celebrity crush as the artful dodger in Oliver! abd didger has always been my favourite character by miles. I hadn't heard about him or Oliver! in years but just 4 days ago I found myself humming "I'd do anything" so I searched a few links about it and within minutes I came across pictures and articles about jacks death. I was COMPLETELY overwhelmed and shocked because for some reason I thought the movie was made when I was young and I thought jack would be in his late 20s not dead at 53! I was instantly shocked and the more I read about his life after Oliver and how he died the more upset I got. Oliver was my favourite movie as a child and I love dodger (jack). For the past couple of nights I have found myself crying in bed about it I am honestly so sad about my discoveries and feel like I have lost someone very close to me. I feel as though I am Grieving. is this normal considering it is someone I have never met?

Hello, and welcome to the forum. It's wonderful to find more people here. I'm terribly sorry because I've wanted to reply to your message for weeks, but I've been very busy, and I also wanted to answer the best I could. Your post had moved me and I felt really identified with you. I can understand you perfectly. Oliver! is one of my favorite films and I have always loved the Dodger. I'm not as young as you, but I wasn't born when they made the film either, and I haven't seen it in a theatre. Actually, I've only seen Jack once on the big screen, as Much in Robin Hood. It was amazing to see him again. I hadn't had the chance to see him in any other film besides Oliver! until then, although my uncle had told me about Melody (which I couldn't see until about one year ago). You're a sensitive person and I think it's something completely natural. Don't worry. It doesn't matter that you never met Jack, he's part of your life, you've grown up enjoying his work. He's brought you happiness and inspiration. He has meant something special to you, so you 've always felt he was somebody close to you. That's great, something beatiful. You don't have to worry, and don't think it's weird. I felt the same and I wondered those things too. I thought nobody would understand me, and I was even ashamed for not being able to hold my tears. I will tell you more about all this if you like. Thanks for sharing your experience. Please, keep writing :) Lots of kisses 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thank you so much for replying. I thought no one was coming on the website anymore. Your post means a lot to me and I am still very upset about Jack Wilds death. I have watched Melody and I think it is a brilliant film. I started to have feelings of wishing I had been born back in his time rather than in 1996 with all the modern day technology that I feel is impoverishing our lives. I have never been so upset about a celebrities death before though I don't like to call Jack a celebrity because I feel he was more than that. I don't believe I would be as upset if I had the comfort of knowing he had had a happy fulfilling life which I feel he really didn't. Watching Oliver! makes me happy not only because it is an amazing film and Jack Wilds performance is legendary but because I know this was probably the happiest time of his life and I feel like watching him in his happiest time is keeping him safe for some reason. I never used to cry at the end but I do every single time now because I feel that Jack is slipping away and I can't keep him safe from his future anymore.

I know what you mean. You've described everything very well in your message, and I feel very identified with you again. :)I've always loved Jack's smile at the end of Oliver!. That scene with Dodger and Fagin is not only my favorite scene from the movie, but one of my favorites scenes of all time. Jack's smile is the loveliest one I've ever seen. I've always smiled when he does it in the film, but since I knew about Jack's death and all the pain he went through there are tears in my eyes too when I see that moment. I feel the same you do, and I think about his happiness at that time and all the good chances to show his great talent that could appeared to him from then. Well, actually he could show it in many other films and series but I'd wish things would have been much better for him. It's really sad. Jack said he wanted to be remembered as an entertainer, bringing fun and joy to people through his work. Actors like playing different kinds of roles and different genres, and so did Jack, but I read he said he especially enjoyed when he had the chance to make people laugh. He loved to make people laugh so much that they find very hard to stop. It's difficult to do that when you're suffering so much and he did it. He was so talented and gifted. I think he gave his best. I love his smile and his contagious laughter. He deserved the happiness he has brought us. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I love his smile as well. He was an amazing actor and I think had he not encountered the troubles he did he would easily have gone down as one of the best actors of all time which in my eyes he is. I always laugh at the part in the movie when Fagin is cooking something and Dodger walks over and picks it off the skewer and says "that one for me eh Fagin?" it's just brilliant :'). I see all the newer Dodgers and none of them match up to Jack not even close although Robert Madge is very good. It's weird to think I am the same age as he was in Oliver! now because he looks so young in it - I always thought he was about 11. He always looked young for his age until he got ill :( The story of Jack Wild is a magnificent but devastating story.

Hello :) Sorry for not having replied before, but I'm going crazy with some exams and homework.Yes, I really regret he had all those troubles. It's terrible to think about how much he suffered and it's really sad to think of how all those things damaged his career. He was an amazing actor. I agree with you, he could have been in one of the best positions of a list or ranking of the best actors from all times. I love to see that many people feel this, thinking about the creation of sites and forums and looking that there are many members here, and we all are people who love Jack and his work, but I hate to find he's so unknown in my country. It's a shame, but here it's really hard to find things related to him. I 've been able to enjoy more of his work and get beatiful pics through internet. I love that scene too, that moment it's really funny. The Dodger is great :) I was surprised too when I read he was fifteen then. He looked younger. Actually, my father, who liked Jack very much, said he was really funny being so little and acting as he was older, a child acting as young man. He thought he was younger, about the age you have said more or less, and sometimes he had some mature expressions on his face. He couldn't imagine he was only one year younger than him, since my father was born in 1951 and Jack in 1952. Unbelievable! hahaha ;) i'll go back with my books now, but I'll take a look over here.
